Creating Vision Boards

"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart...
Who looks outside dreams, who looks inside, awakes."
- Carl Jung

Zen Gypsies' Vision Boards

It's the beginning of the new year, and your inbox is probably filled with more 21-day challenges than you ever dreamed existed!  These challenges can be really helpful in getting a solid start down the path towards your dreams.  However, it can also be overwhelming trying to decide what to tackle when there are so many choices.  To hone in on the challenges, goals or resolutions that really speak to your heart, you might like to try a few mindful self-reflection exercises that will bring clarity and set you up for success.

If you've already done your reflections of the year past and look forward to 2014, you've made great strides towards achieving your dreams.  If you haven't yet, here are some resources to get you started on that journey.  Another tool for self-reflection is to create a vision board.

To help you manifest those dreams or discover ones you didn't even know you had, it can be eye-opening to craft a pictorial version of your desires with a vision board.  Once you have a board filled with delicious images, text, and drawings that call to you, you'll be able to take a step back and see with fresh eyes what you may not have been able to verbalize in your written journal.  And while it’s more challenging to review your journal entries every day, your vision board can be placed front and center, for example, at your desk, in your kitchen, near your entryway, or on your bedroom mirror, serving as a potent reminder of where you are going.  It's readily available to provide you with inspiration to take steps (even if they are tiny ones) each day towards your dreams.  Vision boards can be created at any time of the year and for every dream you have.  By all means, don’t limit yourself to one.  Build one for every area of your life where you desire growth, expansion and joy.

With that in mind, on a cold winter afternoon armed with paints, glue, magazines, markers and our fertile imaginations, we set out to create vision boards for our budding Zen Gypsies venture.  We set the intention to think and feel bigger and wider than our current vision.  Oftentimes, it’s difficult to dream about the future without binding it within the constraints of one’s current situation.  The beauty of crafting a vision board is that it can help you step outside of the realm of self-limiting beliefs and into unlimited abundance.  When engaged in this type of play, we get back in touch with the innocence of childhood where everything seemed possible… where everything WAS possible and still is.  By the end of our session, we were pleased and laughing, full of hope for the future of our endeavor.  What was clear to us was that our core desires and values were evident in the multiple collages we had created:  love, passion, freedom, community, abundance, fun, creativity, joy.

"Now is the time for you to suspend your disbelief -- to believe that anything is possible in your life -- and to embrace change.  Be brave and take the leap--what comes next will amaze you."
- Joyce Schwarz

  1. Hi, thanks for the quote and reference to THE VISION BOARD book by Joyce Schwarz --one of the secrets that our Certified Vision Board coaches know is that you should put your picture in the center of the board -- so that you "OWN" your vision and see yourself immersed in your vision. PS You and your readers may enjoy this link to a free chapter of THE VISION BOARD book that focuses on the ancient art of visioning -- a crucial first step in creating and living your vision board: http://tinyurl.com/seeinsidebook

    1. Thanks so much for commenting and providing the link for the free chapter for our readers. Creating vision boards has been a great tool in helping us get started on this adventure. The above photo is a collage of several vision boards, and although we're not in the center, we did include ourselves (with Oprah, no less) to inspire us as we build a community around our vision.
